A passion for viticulture drives us
Heir to a family that has been present in Westhoffen since the 18th century, Etienne took over the winegrowing tradition of his ancestors in 1996. Full of passion and projects, he is keen to preserve the best of the legacies of the past.
In the historic center of Westhoffen, the small family-run Loew estate is thriving. Heir to a historic family, whose traces go back to the 18th century in Westhoffen, Etienne Loew created his estate in 1996. Trained as an oenologist, he taught for 10 years at a viticultural college, alongside his work as a winemaker. With his wife Caroline, they vinify on a parcel-by-parcel basis to produce fresh, well-balanced wines that restaurateurs love.
Philosophy
As each year is different, Etienne and Caroline Loew believe that nothing can be taken for granted, and that it’s important to know how to evolve. Listening to nature, understanding it, being attentive to it and making the most of what it has to offer produces exceptional cuvées, halfway between the art and science of viticulture. Certified organic since 2009, the estate is now a Demeter and Biodyvin biodynamic vineyard.
The terroirs
The estate has 7 terroir families with a 5 km radius: oolitic limestone, muschelkalck, dolomitic sandstone, green marl, red marl, black marl and gypsum. It includes the Sussenberg, Ostenberg and historic Bruderbach crus, as well as the renowned Grands Crus Altenberg de Bergbieten and Engelberg. This richness is reflected in the quality of the estate’s wines, which appeal to gourmets.
Our favorite
The Riesling Bruderbach “Clos des Frères” has all the characteristics of a great terroir. Its history dates back to 1260, when the hermits of Bruderbach established the first production charter for the Clos. This rich wine, with its aromas of eucalyptus, peppermint and bitter orange, is a perfect match for fine seafood or slightly sweet-and-sour dishes.
