Has the culture of aperitif changed after the pandemic and the return of a “normal” life?

The Syndicat des Apéritifs à Croquer conducted via L’Obsoco a quantitative study with a sample of 1,000 people representative of the French population between March 17 and 23, 2022. Here are the main results.

The aperitif is indeed an emblem of the conviviality “à la française”. According to statistics, 90% of French people are used to organizing aperitifs at home, and 32% even do it regularly, once a week or more. This practice is particularly common among the CSP+, 25-34 year olds and men.

The aperitif plays a crucial role in creating and strengthening social ties. 60% of the French people surveyed say they drink with other people, mainly friends or relatives (96%), their spouses (89%) and their family (87%). The solo aperitif, on the other hand, seems to be an occasional practice for 40% of respondents.

Conviviality and sharing are the main reasons to organize an aperitif at home. Respondents place at the top of their motivations “being together with loved ones” (54%), “having a moment of conviviality and laughter” (52%) and “the pleasure of sharing and exchanging with loved ones or guests” (46%). Individual motivations, such as “having a moment of relaxation and decompression” (38%), “letting go to break away from the daily routine” (18%) or “having a little treat before a meal” (13%), come in second place.

Thus, the aperitif perfectly embodies the spirit of conviviality and sharing that characterizes French culture. It allows to create bonds, to live pleasant moments and to enjoy life in good company.

The history of the aperitif goes back to antiquity…

The aperitif is a tradition that dates back to antiquity. Its historical origin is linked to the Latin word “aperire”, which means to open. Prior to 1888, the term “aperitif” was used as an adjective in a medical context to describe something that opened pores, ducts and vessels. In 1888, the word became a common name for any alcoholic beverage consumed before a meal, reputed to stimulate the appetite.

The Romans used to drink honey-sweetened wines before the meal, while the Gauls preferred spicy drinks. In the Middle Ages, sweet wines flavored with herbs were served before the meal, accompanied by the “table plate” or “first course” consisting of toast, fruit, small pies, sausage and watercress. This combination of solid and liquid was supposed to facilitate digestion, giving the aperitif a medicinal value.

With the Empire, the consumption of liquors became widespread and the “aperitif hour” became almost official at five o’clock. Since the 1970s, the duration of the aperitif has increased, and this moment is now accompanied by various products designed specifically for this occasion.

Thus, the aperitif is a tradition that has evolved over time and cultures, but has always been associated with conviviality, sharing and stimulating the appetite before a meal.
