Of Swiss origin, the Meyer family settled in Katzenthal in 1732. Two generations have succeeded Félix Meyer, the estate’s founder, and left their mark. In the 1960s, his grandson François Meyer, helped by his uncle and aunt in the vineyards, Léon and Lucie Fonné, and supported by his wife Nicole, began bottling and marketing to private customers. In 1992, François and Nicole’s eldest son, Félix, modernized the business and developed export sales. He was voted “Winemaker of the Year”, Alsace region, by the Guide Hachette 2022!
Philosophy
The priority is to adapt the work to each plot, each situation, in order to get the best out of each one. There is no one way of working the vineyard, but almost as many as there are plots. Added to this are the 6 grape varieties, which do not have the same agronomic requirements, and it’s easy to see why great flexibility is so important in relation to each plot. The vineyard is farmed organically.
The terroirs
The estate covers 18.5 ha and 8 communes: Katzenthal, Ammerschwihr, Ingersheim, Riquewihr, Mittelwihr and Kientzheim, Beblenheim, Sigolsheim. Alsace’s geological mosaic and climatic variety are well represented, with very different soils, reliefs and exposures. This range of terroirs includes 6 Grands Crus (Wineck-Schlossberg, Kaefferkopf, Furstentum, Sporen, Schoenenbourg and Mandelberg) and 4 Lieux-Dits (Hinterburg de Katzenthal, Dorfburg, Pfoeller and Altenbourg).
