The ancestors of the Lorentz family arrived in Bergheim in 1680. Already described as “gourmets”, they have always had a foot in wine: farmers, winemakers, brokers. In 1836, Gustave Lorentz gave his name to the company. Today, the estate covers 33 ha in Bergheim, including 2 Grands Crus: Altenberg de Bergheim and Kanzlerberg, Alsace’s smallest Grand Cru.
Philosophy
From the vine to the cellar, Domaine Lorentz strives to produce dry, gourmet wines with no residual sugar. With an ideal clay-limestone terroir that doesn’t suffer from drought, the wines are refined, refreshing, well-balanced and with a good acid structure. All the estate’s wines have been certified organic since 2012.
Terroirs
In addition to the Grands Crus, the domaine offers terroir wines from 3 lieux-dits. The Burg is located at the foot of Château du Reichenberg, close to the Grand Cru Kanzlerberg, a cool, late-ripening terroir of heavy marl, ideal for Riesling. The Schofweg is a terroir with the same marl, limestone and sandstone composition as the Grand Cru Altenberg de Bergheim, where a very rich Pinot Gris grows. The Rotenberg, with its southern exposure facing Ribeauvillé, is ideal for harvesting over-ripe Gewurztraminer.
