Écomusée d'Alsace

An Alsatian Village Frozen in Time

The Écomusée d’Alsace, located in Ungersheim, is a true journey into the past. As France’s largest open-air museum, it recreates an authentic Alsatian village from the early 20th century, complete with its half-timbered houses, school, town hall, and artisan workshops. Here, every building has a story: they were dismantled and then rebuilt identically to preserve the architecture and rural heritage of Alsace.

While strolling through the cobblestone streets, the Écomusée and Alsatian rural heritage, you can observe a blacksmith at work, smell the aroma of bread baking in a wood-fired oven, or listen to the tales of costumed inhabitants. It’s a total immersion in a bygone way of life that remains fascinating.

Far from “being a simple museum, the” Écomusée d’Alsace is a living place where both young and old can participate in numerous interactive activities. Throughout the year, events allow visitors to relive local traditions: shows, demonstrations of old trades, bread-making workshops, not to mention seasonal festivities such as the harvest, Christmas, or even transhumance.

Children will be delighted to meet farm animals, ride in a horse-drawn carriage, or have fun with old-fashioned games. Each season brings its own set of discoveries, making every visit a unique and enriching experience.
